‘Widow, make Karva Chauth compulsory for all divorced, Supreme Court rejected the demand for a person

The Supreme Court has rejected a petition seeking to make Karva Chauth mandatory for women. Earlier, the Punjab Haryana High Court had imposed a compensation of 1 thousand rupees on the petitioner for this demand. The Supreme Court, while justifying it, said that if he files such a petition in future, then the High Court should do more strictness. Narendra Malhotra, who hails from Panchkula, had demanded to make Karva Chauth as ‘Saubhagya Parv’ and make it mandatory for all women. He said that it is wrong to not allow widow women to celebrate this festival. This festival is associated with Maa Parvati. Widow, divorced and women living in live in should also be allowed to celebrate it. The petitioner had demanded from the High Court that he should make a law and ask the government to make this festival mandatory for all women. Provisions should also be made to punish women who do not follow the tradition. On 24 January 2025, a bench headed by Chief Justice Sheel Nagu of the High Court described the petition as absurd and baseless. In view of the attitude of the High Court, the petitioner’s counsel said to withdraw the petition. The judges showed generosity on this. The petitioner was allowed to withdraw the petition, asking the petitioner to deposit Rs 1000 at the Rogi Welfare Center of Chandigarh PGI. Dissatisfied with the High Court order, the petitioner moved to the Supreme Court. A bench headed by Justice Surya Kant expressed surprise on the petition. Justice Surya Kant said, ‘The petitioner reached here as soon as the High Court refused to listen to this futile petition. We will not interfere in the order to impose compensation on behalf of the High Court. We hope that the High Court will deal more strictly with such a petition in future.
