Due to heavy rains in Tamil Nadu, crops have suffered extensive damage. The cruel weather havoc is seen from Mumbai to Bengaluru and Tamil Nadu. Due to unseasonal rains and thunderstorms, farmers have suffered the most. More than 4000 acres of crops were damaged in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra. Now a similar news has come out from Tamil Nadu. Farmers of Delta districts of Tamil Nadu have demanded immediate assessment of crop loss due to unseasonal rains from the state government and Rs 35,000 per acre. According to leaders of various peasant organizations of the state, more than 3,000 acres of summer crops like paddy, sesame, cotton and black gram have been badly affected due to heavy rains on 16 and 17 May in Thanjavur district. The sudden torrential rains have also caused heavy damage to banana gardens and betel fields, causing extensive agricultural loss in the area. In areas such as Boothlur, Thiruvonam, Kumbakonam and Tirupananthal, the rainwater stopped in the fields further increased the damage. The aggrieved farmers said that due to poor maintenance and delay of drains, it became impossible to remove water on time, due to which the fields were submerged for several days. Tanjavur Kisan Sangh leader Well Murugan said that the paddy crop prepared for harvesting due to long waterlogging has now sprouted, which has made it unsuitable for sale. He said, ‘The entire crop of paddy has been ruined. We immediately informed the officials and urged to visit the affected areas and start assessing the damage, but no officer has come so far. Expressing disappointment over the inaction of the administration, Murugan said that if the situation is constantly ignored, farmers may be forced to protest. He said, ‘We are in critical condition. The crop was ready for harvesting and now everything is ruined. Immediate intervention is needed. Farmers’ organizations have demanded that the state government should immediately start assessing crop loss and give compensation of Rs 35,000 per acre to overcome the financial loss to the farmers. The farmers said that timely assistance is important, so that the debt can be avoided and farming can be continued in the next season. Due to agricultural primary livelihood for thousands of families in Cauvery Delta, farmers have appealed to the district administration and state officials to take quick action and provide relief before the situation deteriorated.
