The Supreme Court will hear the Waqf Amendment Act case on Tuesday, May 20. A bench headed by Chief Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai, postponed the hearing, said that the questions raised about interim relief will be considered first. During this time all the parties will be given a chance to speak. On Thursday (May 15, 2025), the case was imposed in a bench headed by Chief Justice BR Gawai. Earlier, former Chief Justice Sanjeev Khanna was listening to this. The new bench tried to understand the dimensions of the case. He made it clear that the hearing on interim relief will be about the Waqf law of 2025. The petitioner challenging the 1995 Waqf law will not be heard in it. The interim issues that the court wants to consider before the detailed hearing on the new Waqf law is- the presence of non-Muslim members in Waqf by user, Waqf Board and Council and the identification of government land claimed by Waqf Board. The court held in April recorded the assurance of the government on record that no Waqf property would be denotified at the moment. Also, no new member will be given a place in the Waqf Board and Waqf Council. This assurance was given by the government when the court indicated an interim ban on the implementation of some sections of the law. In the hearing held on Thursday, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, presented for the central government, assured the court that the status quo would be maintained in the case. In petitions challenging the Waqf Amendment Act, it has been said that this is a law discriminating against Muslims. Waqf is a religious institution. Government intervention in his functioning is wrong. In the reply filed in the Supreme Court, the Central Government has demanded not to stop it while defending the law. The Center has said that the court should consider the law and take a final decision. It would not be right to stop some sections. The government has said the provisions of the registration of Waqf by user and giving place to non -Muslim members in the Waqf Board.
The hearing of the Waqf Amendment Act case on May 20, will first consider the demand for interim relief
