‘Saving resources and administrative efficiency will increase’, one nation, JPC president spoke on one election

JPC Chairman PP Chaudhary: The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), formed on the proposal of ‘One Nation, One Election’ (One Nation, One Election/Onoe), completed its state tour in Mumbai on Monday (May 19, 2025). The chairman of the committee PP Chaudhary while addressing the media underlined the widespread benefits of holding elections together. Chaudhary said, “The Lok Sabha and Assembly elections will save a lot of money and human resources. Currently, the election expenses are considered to be 1.6% of GDP i.e. around ₹ 5,000 crore, but if the effects of banks remain closure and economic uncertainty are also added during elections, then this figure may be more.” He said that the deployment of teachers and employees of schools during elections affects the education of children. “There is information about human resources, but the economic impacts related to it have not yet been assessed. Once a detailed economic study will come out, we will be able to make better comments on it.” JPC met representatives of several areas on a visit to Mumbai, JPC during his visit to Mumbai along with representatives of banking and education sector as well as various political leaders. Chaudhary said that the committee will also visit other states so that the views of all stakeholders can be heard and understood. He said, “The information we are collecting will be very important to submit our recommendation in Parliament. Our aim is not just to reduce the expenditure, but also to ensure better administration and more voting. Elections will strengthen democracy simultaneously.” He said, “While the emphasis is being placed on holding the Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections together, Chaudhary also indicated that elections of local bodies can also be held simultaneously in future. He also clarified that the confidentiality and fairness of the election will remain paramount. This exercise of JPC is being considered a significant step towards electoral reforms in the country.”
