Metro service was also started in Silicon Valley of the country and Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka. Thousands of people travel by metro train every day. Bangalore Metro is also known as Namma Metro. Initially, there was no toilet facility at the stations of Bangalore Metro, for which there were many criticisms. Now it has been given attention. However, passengers will have to pay the price for this. The responsibility of providing toilets at Namma metro stations has been entrusted to Sulabh International. Metro passengers of Bengaluru will now have to loose pockets to use public toilets. Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has entrusted the responsibility of maintenance of toilet services at 12 Namma Metro stations in the city to Sulabh International. It is a non-profit institution which is known for the operation of public hygiene facilities across India. This contract has been done for 5 years. According to the new system, passengers will be charged Rs 2 for urine and Rs 5 for toilet use. This pay-end-face model has been applied at 12 stations of two metro lines in the first phase. Green Line Metro Station National College Lalbagh South and Circle Jayanagar National School Road Banashankari Jayaprakash Nagar Yehprakash Nagar Yehlacharya Purple Line Metro Station Sir M. Visvesvaraya Station (Central College) Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Station (Vidhan Saudha) Kaban Park Krantiveer Sangoli Railway Station Bangalore Metro has increased. The fare has increased a huge increase in metro fare a few months before the decision on the toilet, which was already dissatisfied in the metro fare a few months before the BMRCL. When Namma Metro started in 2011, passengers and civic organizations had strongly criticized for not having toilet facilities. In the year 2013, the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission had described the absence of toilets in metro stations. After this, in 2015, BMRCL launched a free toilet facility within the paid concourse area. Reaction on the verdict is now once again coming out on the decision to charge a fee for the toilet. State President of Karnataka BJP BY Vijayendra has strongly criticized the move. He said, ‘After 71 percent fare hike, the Congress government has now touched a new low level – to charge fee for toilet use at 12 stations of Bengaluru Metro! A city that is already struggling with inflation and shabby infrastructure, now the government has also started commercializing human needs. Passengers and social organizations are seeing resentment about this decision. Experts believe that even though maintenance of facilities is necessary, it is opposite to public interest to make basic facilities a means of profit.
