Tulbul Project Importance for India and Pakistan: India has again prepared the water strike to crave Pakistan for drop by drop. Earlier India postponed the Indus Water Treaty and now reports have come to light on the Tulbul project on the Jhelum river, which was stopped in 1987 after Pakistan’s protest. What is Tulbul Navigation Project? The Tulbul Navigation Project is also called the Wular Barrage Project. It was started in the 1980s. It is a control structure built at the mouth of the Wular Lake in Baramulla, which can control the flow of the Jhelum River. With this, transportation can be made easier by stopping water in Jhelum River. In 1984, work started at the mouth of the Wular Lake on the Jhelum River. Concrete piling and foundation work was completed on the left bank, when Pakistan objected. India stopped the project in 1987. Its purpose was to provide navigation facility throughout the year and increase power generation in winter. It was to be made to connect Anantnag, Srinagar and Baramulla districts. Pakistan objected to any storage on Jhelum under the Indus Water Treaty. On 2 October 1987, India accepted Pakistan’s objection and stopped work. The project has been stopped since then. Pakistan was harassing Pakistan, there was a 13 round of talks between India and Pakistan, but the solution was not found. Pakistan claimed that it would stop the flow of water from Jhelum to its area. Pakistan feared that the navigation lock could harm its triple canal project (Jhelum-Chenab and Upper Bari Doab Canal). Also, expressed the threat of control over the water part from the stored water. Concrete piling and foundation work on the left bank is still almost complete. After the postponement of the Indus Water Agreement, India postponed the Indus Water Agreement after the opportunity Pahalgam attack with India. Now if India starts work on the Tulbul project, Pakistan cannot object because India is no longer included in the Indus Water Treaty. Therefore, India also has a big opportunity, so that diplomatic pressure can be made on Pakistan to cooperate against terror.
