There has been a news about the dam on the Indus river, which will fly away the sleep of the nights of Pakistan and the rest of the day. In fact, after suspending the Indus Water Treaty after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, the Central Government is considering a plan to increase the length of Ranbir Canal on Chenab River as part of an attempt to maximize India. In this regard, a senior official said that till now India has been using limited water from Chenab, which is mostly for irrigation, but now there is a scope to increase the energy production sector to meet the demand for electricity, especially when the treaty is suspended. At the same time, another official said that India is planning to increase its existing hydroelectric capacity on the rivers about 3000 MW which was previously used by Pakistan and a study is being made to increase hydroelectric capacity. The official said, “A major plan is to increase the length of Ranbir Canal to 120 km.” He also said that since it takes time to build the infrastructure, all the stakeholders have been urged to expedite the process. He said that apart from this, the process of extracting silt from Kathua, Ravi and Paragwal canals has also started. The Indus Water Treaty (IWT) in the World Bank’s mediation in 1960 is related to the distribution and use of water of the Indus River and its tributaries between India and Pakistan. But India decided to suspend the treaty after the Pahalgam attack and since then India has been saying that the treaty will remain suspended “until Pakistan stops supporting terrorism trusted and permanently.” Rakesh Ranjan Kumar Rakesh Ranjan Kumar has more than 10 years of experience in digital journalism.
