Depression medicines also effective in fighting cancer! Tumor reduces size, big disclosure in new study

Antidepressant & cancer treatment: Cancer is a fatal disease, due to which millions of people die every year. Constant research is being done around the world about cancer and its precise treatment is being discovered. From time to time, new treatment of cancer comes out. Now American scientists have claimed in a study that common medicines used for depression can prevent tumor growth and fight cancer. These medicines can protect our immune system from cancer by strengthening. This research has raised hopes of new treatment of cancer.

Scientists at the University of California (UCLA), USA have claimed in new research that the common drug used in the treatment of depression, selective serotonin reiuptech inhibitor can reduce the size of the tumor and make the body more effective in fighting cancer. SSRI drugs are commonly used in the treatment of mental health problems including depression. The new study suggests that these drugs can now be used in the treatment of cancer.

This study has been published in Cell Journal. In this research, scientists tried SSRIS on rat and human tumor models. The effect of these drugs was seen on various types of cancer types like melanoma, breast cancer, prostate, colon and bladder cancer. Scientists found that using SSRIs reduced the size of the tumor to more than 50 percent on an average and the body’s T-calls (defense cells) began to destroy cancer cells more effectively. Scientists were also surprised to see its results.

The lead author of this study, Dr. Lily Yang, said that depression medicines i.e. SSRIS not only the brain, but also our immune T-calls, so that they can fight better than cancer. Initially the researchers were focusing on an enzyme Mao-A, which breaks serotonin and other neurotransmitters, but due to the side effects of drugs associated with MAO-A, their focus went to a protein called SERT, which only transports serotonin. SSRIS targets this sert and these drugs have been used for a long time without serious side effects.

During the research, it was also seen that when SSRIs were mixed with traditional cancer treatment, the tumor decreased more rapidly. In some mice, the cancer was completely finished i.e. complete remuneration. This means that treatment can be made more effective by combining SSRIs with other cancer therapy. This discovery can bring a major revolution in the field of cancer therapy in future.

Now further scientists will try to know that cancer patients who are already taking SSRIS, are the results of their treatment better? If yes, SSRIs can be widely adopted as an alternative cancer treatment. Because these medicines are already considered available and safe in the market. Therefore, the process of reusing them can be simple and faster than creating a new medicine.
