Sugar Board in CBSE School: Taking seriously the problem of increasing type-2 diabetes and obesity in children, the Central Board of Secondary Education CBSE has issued strict instructions to all its affiliated schools. The board has asked schools to make a sugar board in their premises, where children should be given clear information about the dangers caused by excessive sugar. This sugar board will be written with indications that eating this food will provide so much sugar which can be risk for diabetes and obesity. This step of CBSE has been taken after the recommendation of National Child Rights Protection Commission-NCPCR, which said that children in schools need to take concrete steps to protect against the damage caused by junk food and sweet beverages.

According to reports, there has been a worrying increase in type-2 diabetes cases in children in the last decade, which was previously seen in adults only. The main reason for this situation is being considered as easily available snacks, cold drinks and processed food in schools. According to the expert, this habit in children is not only affecting their health but also on studies and mental development.

Information about healthy food in sugar board
CBSE has asked all schools to install sugar boards in the school in the school, where students can easily read which foods contains how much sugar and how it affects their health. The board has clarified that these boards should contain the recommended amount of sugar daily, the amount of sugar in general food and beverages, more sugar intake diseases like obesity, teeth problems and diabetes. Also, healthy diet options should also be mentioned on these boards so that children are motivated to choose better options. CBSE has also asked schools to organize awareness seminars and workshops for students at regular intervals, in which they should be informed about the correct catering habits. The schools have also been asked to report these activities before July 15 and send to the photo board. Experts believe that this initiative will also curb the availability of junk food found in the school canteen and will turn the children towards the right catering.

Changes in canteen menu are necessary
Expert says that this decision of CBSE is the demand of time. It has been revealed in the World Health Organization and various reports that children between 4 to 10 years are getting 13 percent of their daily total calories and 11 to 18 years of children are getting from 15 percent of sugar, while this quantity should not exceed 5 percent. In such a situation, this initiative can bring positive changes in the lifestyle of children at the school level. NCPCR has also worried that children of poor and disadvantaged sections, whose access is limited to health services, can become the biggest victims of this problem. This step taken by CBSE is an important effort to connect school education with health education. Experts are also suggesting that along with this initiative, schools should change their canteen menu and promote healthy options, so that children have practically better eating. If healthy eating habits are developed in children from a young age, then many serious diseases occurring in future can be avoided. This order of CBSE is not only guidelines for schools but it is also a warning for parents and society that children’s food will now stop taking lightly.
