The central government has decided to notify the amendment of the 1966 Chinese control order to rein in large jaggery and Khadsari units and unbridled sugar mills. By amending this, the central government will bring 66 large jaggery and Khandasari units under 500 tonnes of crushing (TCD) per day under the purview of Chinese control order. Most of these units are in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. Due to this amendment, sugarcane farmers will be able to ensure proper and beneficial prices and this will also help in estimating sugar production correctly. India’s annual sugarcane production is consumed in jaggery and Khandasari units annually. Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra said, “The purpose of this amendment is to make the regulatory structure controlling the Chinese sector simple and effective in accordance with the change in the present industry dynamics and technology.” The secretary said that by including them, sugarcane farmers will be able to get appropriate and beneficial prices (FRPs) from Khandasari units and in addition to better estimates of sugar production. Ashwani Srivastava, Joint Secretary, Food Ministry, said that the total capacity of 373 Khandasari units in the country is around 95,000 tonnes per day. Srivastava said, ‘Of these 66 units have a capacity of more than 500 TCDs. These units will be regulated under this order. He said that these units will be registered under the National Single Window System (NSWS). These units have to be registered on digital platforms in two months. This order includes sugarcane lost, jaggery, jaggery and ethanol in various sub -products. The revised order adopts the definitions of the Food Safety Standards Authority of India for various Chinese products and includes sections related to Chinese Price Regulation. Earlier she was part of other orders. Sugar exports: India’s sugar mills can only export 8 lakh tonnes of sugar instead of 10 lakh tonnes due to low demand in the 2025-26 session. Out of this, the remaining 2 lakh tonnes of sugar will be consumed in the country. So far, 3 million tonnes of sugar has been exported. Review of wheat supply restoration in ration Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra said that the Center will review about the eligibility restoration of wheat allocation eligibility under the Public Distribution System (PDS) in case it is not possible for the existing procurement campaign. He said that the Center has so far procured 256 lakh tonnes of wheat and it is 25 percent more than this period last year.
