He realized the dream of making India self -sufficient in nuclear power and was honored with ‘Padma Vibhushan’. MR Srinivasan died at the age of 95. The first atomic reactor of India was involved in the construction of ‘Apsara’. In 200, Dr. Srinivasan was awarded ‘Padma Vibhushan’. Mr Srinivasan: Dr. MR Srinivasan, the veteran of India’s nuclear power sector and former chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, is no longer among us. He breathed his last at the age of 95 in Udhagamandalam, Tamil Nadu on Tuesday. With his death, India lost a scientist who realized the dream of making the country self -sufficient in nuclear power. Dr. Srinivasan recognized India’s nuclear power program globally. In 1955, he started his career in the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and worked for the country for five decades. He was involved with Dr. Homi Bhabha in the construction of India’s first nuclear reactor ‘Apsara’, which was started in 1956. This was the first step of India’s nuclear journey. In 1959, he was made the main engineer of the country’s first nuclear power station. In 1967, he became a project engineer of the Madras Atomic Energy Station, which showed India the path of self -sufficiency in nuclear power. In 1974, he became the director of DAE’s Power Projects Division and became the chairman of the Nuclear Power Board in 1984. In 1987, Dr. Srinivasan took over the responsibility of Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission and Secretary of DAE. The same year he laid the foundation of Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and became the first chairman. Under his leadership, India developed 18 nuclear units, including seven, seven were under construction and four were planned. With his efforts, India moved forward rapidly in the field of nuclear power. He was awarded ‘Padma Vibhushan’ in 2000 for his contribution. His daughter Sharda Srinivasan said that my father’s dream was that India became self -sufficient in the field of energy, and his legacy will always survive. Some interesting and important things related to Dr. Srinivasan, Dr. Srinivasan was called the ‘nuclear shilpi of India’, because he laid the foundation for making India a world guru in nuclear power. During his time, the use of nuclear technology also started in the treatment of cancer and farming, which benefited millions of people. He was an inspiration for young scientists and used to say, no goal is impossible with science and hard work. During his tenure, India increased cooperation in nuclear power with countries like Russia and France, which strengthened India’s global credit.
