After 16 years in Kerala … monsoon caused havoc, Red in 11 and Orange alert in 3

In Kerala, heavy rains and strong winds amidst the premature monsoon time in Kerala on Saturday, houses and crops were damaged, power supply was disrupted and waterlogged on the roads. Electricity supply was disrupted in many areas due to damage to homes and vehicles due to uprooted trees and broken branches in various parts of the state. Roads in many rural and urban areas were submerged due to continuing heavy rains throughout the day in the state. Revenue Minister K Rajan said that in some places there may be heavy rains in a short time without warning, which can cause sudden floods and landslides. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced to arrive in the state ahead of monsoon time. The department said that the arrival of the monsoon in the state after a gap of 16 years has come ahead of time. According to IMD, the monsoon came eight days before normal and the last time it happened on 23 May 2009. Earlier, on 19 May 1990 after 1975, the early arrival of monsoon was observed. IMD said that heavy rains are expected to continue throughout Kerala with the arrival of monsoon and red and orange alerts have been issued in many districts of the state for the next few days. He issued red alert in Kannur and Kasargod districts and Orange Alert in the remaining 12 districts of the state. Apart from this, red alert was issued in five districts for Sunday and Orange alert in nine districts. For Monday, red alert was issued in 11 districts of Kerala and Orange Alert in the remaining three. In view of the arrival of monsoon and the red alert issued by IMD, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that in view of the current situation, the government will be on alert for the next one week. He said in the ‘Facebook’ post, ‘State level review meeting has been called and instructions have been given to complete the preparations related to rain immediately.’ He also said that pre -monsoon review meetings and preparations have been completed in all the districts. The Chief Minister said that a letter has been sent to the Center for the deployment of nine teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) in the state. He said, ‘Instructions have also been given to transfer people living in areas fearing landslides to safe places as a precaution. Control papers have been set up in all taluka offices of the state. Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra spoke to the District Magistrates of Wayanad, Malappuram and Kozhikode in view of heavy rains and assessed disaster preparations in their districts. In Wayanad, the District Magistrate ordered the closure of all adventure tourism centers near the Red Zone and other disaster potential areas due to heavy rains and red alerts in the district on Sunday. The district administration said that all mining activities in Wayanad have also been suspended. In Pathanamthitta, the district administration has banned mining and night travel at the mountainous sites from 24 May to 28 May. The district administration has also ordered the removal of people living near disaster potential areas from there. In the morning, state revenue minister K Rajan said that strong winds and heavy rains are a sign of early arrival of monsoon in the state. He also said that there will be more rain in the northern districts of Kozhikode, Idukki and Pathanamthitta. Talking to a TV channel, the minister said that preparations have been made to deal with the challenges arising from it in view of the arrival of monsoon. Rajan said that instructions have been issued to all the District Magistrates regarding the preparations for the monsoon and he will hold an online meeting with them during the day to assess the situation in each district. He advised the general public to take precautions in view of heavy rains and travel only to safe places.
